The Indian world cup victory has once again brought captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership style into the limelight, with almost everyone hailing him as the best captain India has ever had. In an interview a few years ago, Sachin had once stated a very pertinent fact, "Yes, Dhoni is a great captain, but you cannot ignore the fact that he has a very good team with him."
A captain or a leader is only as good as his team. Without taking anything away from Dhoni , a great team makes even a mediocre captain look good.
"Don't lead a pack of sheep. Herd cats instead." When I first read this statement it took me some while to understand it. "In modern-day corporates, as leaders , one often has the flexibility to pick his own team. Most managers stumble at this roadblock ," says Rishi Pandey, CEO of a media company.
"Mediocre managers do not realise the benefit of picking your own team, and end up choosing members whose intellect and capabilities are limited by the leader's own bandwidth." Pandey continues to lament on how intellectual mediocrity creeps into an organisation, "Leaders end up picking members who do not challenge them, who do not threaten their own position. They pick team members who would fall in line easily."
In other words they end up picking a pack of sheep. Have you ever seen a pack of sheep? All of them huddle together and meekly follow instructions of the shepherd. A small stick wielded efficiently keeps the whole pack together.
In such teams, where leaders hire sheep, a bulk of the leader's time is spent in doling out instructions , tracking and managing individuals and in the end, when he has the time, strategically think about the organisation's future. Sheep do not dissent, do not challenge, do not question and, most importantly, do not contribute to the team's cause intellectually .
Unfortunately, managers' insecurity and lack of faith in their own abilities leads them to pick a herd of sheep as their team. Cats, on the contrary, are a completely different breed. These are animals with minds of their own. Put three cats together and you will find them doing their own thing.
Each one will be jumping around, pulling in different directions. Have you ever considered what it will take to manage a herd of cats? Looks impossible , doesn't it?
However, in a group or out of it, cats are fast, intellectually stimulating and managerially challenging. No wonder that when we refer to smart outstanding individuals in a team, we call them cats. Many leaders are often scared by the challenges they will have to face in case they hire cats on their team, and end up settling for sheep.
For these individuals, I would like to point out one aspect of cats you can derive solace from. Cats, if they get comfortable , start trusting and become extremely loyal. Sheep, on the other hand, can be herded by almost anybody.
It all depends on how you treat cats and get them to build trust in you. The message for managers in companies is simple - If you want to succeed in the long term, are desirous of building equity in the organisation, want to be known as someone who is capable of building teams which have great execution skills, then 'sheep' will not get you there. Hire cats in your team.
Getting the right team is half the job done - efficiently leading them to accomplish the mission is the other half. Cats ensure the first half and also guarantee a fun-filled second half. After all this, do you still want to hire sheep? If so, you are definitely not one I would have in my pack.

It will settle down
Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there."
The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake.
As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid.
The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink!" So he came back and told Buddha, "The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink."
After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake. This time too he found that the lake was muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same.
After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back. The disciple reached the lake to find the lake absolutely clean and clear with pure water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.
Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said," See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be.... and the mud settled down on its own - and you got clear water.
Your mind is also like that! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don't have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless."
What did Buddha emphasize here?
He said, "It is effortless." Having ’Peace of Mind' is not a strenuous job; it is an effortless process!

Family run businesses
In family businesses, there are two elements of power- money and control. When these two get mixed up, problems crop in.
One of the ways of solving this is - have family members as equal shareholders and appoint professional managers who control the operations of the business, basically delegate the operational aspects to professionals, thus giving up some control.
The family members can then focus on the strategic aspects of the organization - while playing golf!
Daily operational activities and strategic organizational development go hand-in-hand, but its difficult for the same individual to delve deep in both. And this is exactly what I am referring to.

FIVE TIPS TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SOCKS
Socks are that discreet, hidden part of the official dress and shouldn’t really matter, right? But then you don’t want to get caught with your pants up and a mismatched pair of socks. Here are 5 simple socks selection tips.
1) Colour:
Always select a sock colour that matches your pants. White socks are fine for gym and playing outdoors, but for formal clothing, the socks’ colour should not stand out and create a stark contrast. You will be drawing attention to yourself that you don’t want.
2) Fit:
Select a pair of socks that stay up. Socks bunching around your ankles don’t really say ‘class’ or ‘elegance’. They need not be too tight but need to be tight enough to stay up.
3) Texture:
Texture? You might think. But did you know that the thickness of your socks should actually vary with the occasion? The more formal the occasion, the thinner your socks should be. Thicker socks are best left for more informal occasions.
4) Patterns:
Don’t ever go for a meeting with complex patterns on your socks! It doesn’t exactly impress the bosses. For a formal occasion, wear plain socks. Small, discrete patterns are still usable, but bigger patterns are definitely not recommended.
5) Change:
Finally, the most critical detail. Change your socks everyday! This cannot be emphasised enough. Have a sufficient stock of socks, depending on the number of formal occasions you go to. Falling short of socks to wear could be a serious problem, and wearing smelly socks from last week could leave a bad smell with your hosts after you leave.
So, go ahead, pay some attention to the pairs of socks you own and make sure you are prepared to be well dressed when the occasion arises.

Business Casuals is a term not many of us are comfortable with, because we are not sure what it means. These 5 tips will help solve this problem to an extent.
1) Ask for official guidelines: Ask the human resources department for official guidelines. Business casual means different things at different companies. At a large corporation, it may mean a sport coat with a tie; at a smaller company, it may mean khakis and a polo shirt.
If your company has no written policy, observe what others wear as business casuals to get an idea.
2) Check for meetings: Before you dress casual, check to make sure you don't have any meetings that require formal business attire.
3) Dress Professionally: Select clean, pressed and wrinkle-free clothes. Your outfit should communicate professionalism.
4) Wear a belt: Be sure to wear a belt, and have it match the color of your shoes.
5) Choose proper footwear: Choose your socks properly. Avoid white socks and tube socks. Rubber soled leather shoes or boots are suitable for casual day. Worn-out shoes, sandals or sports shoes are not acceptable.
